Client Rights & Responsibilities

Respect Goes Both Ways.

At No Shame Recovery Counseling, I believe effective counseling starts with honesty, mutual respect, and clear expectations.

You deserve to know your rights, understand your options, and have a voice in your treatment.

You also deserve to know what will be expected of you.

Accountability without judgment. Compassion without coddling.

Your Rights as a Client

You have the right to:

  • Be treated with dignity, compassion, and respect without discrimination, harassment, or retaliation.
  • Receive services within my professional qualifications and scope of practice.
  • Participate in developing your treatment goals and making decisions about your care.
  • Ask questions about your diagnosis, treatment approach, fees, and available alternatives.
  • Receive information about confidentiality, privacy protections, and their legal limitations.
  • Access your records and request corrections as permitted by law.
  • Decline a recommended intervention or discontinue services, subject to applicable legal requirements.
  • Receive appropriate referrals when your needs exceed the services I can provide.
  • Express concerns or file a complaint without fear of retaliation.
  • Receive clear information about fees, cancellation policies, and financial responsibilities.

You are an active participant in your treatment, not a passive recipient of instructions.

Your Responsibilities as a Client

Counseling works best when we both participate.

As a client, you’re expected to:

  • Provide information that’s as accurate and complete as you reasonably can.
  • Participate in developing goals that matter to you.
  • Communicate concerns, questions, or disagreements about your treatment.
  • Attend appointments on time or provide appropriate cancellation notice.
  • Participate from a private, safe location during telehealth appointments.
  • Avoid participating in sessions while significantly impaired by substances.
  • Treat others involved in your care respectfully.
  • Follow agreed-upon financial policies.
  • Communicate when your needs, circumstances, or safety concerns change.

You don’t have to agree with me about everything. In fact, I’d rather we talk about disagreements than pretend they don’t exist.

You don’t have to be perfect. You do have to be willing to participate.

Your Right to Make Your Own Decisions

My role is to support your autonomy, not take control of your life.

I may challenge patterns, offer observations, or recommend a different approach when I believe it’s clinically appropriate.

But your goals, values, and choices matter.

Counseling is collaborative.

Concerns and Complaints

If something about your care doesn’t feel right, I encourage you to discuss it with me when you feel comfortable doing so.

You also have the right to contact the appropriate professional licensing or regulatory authority without discussing your concern with me first.

New Hampshire Office of Professional Licensure and Certification

Website: https://www.oplc.nh.gov/

Information about filing a complaint is available through the state’s licensing authority.

You will not be retaliated against for raising a concern or filing a complaint.

Questions About Your Rights?

I’m happy to explain your rights, responsibilities, and treatment options before or during our work together.

You shouldn’t have to decode a bunch of clinical jargon to understand what you’re agreeing to.

You deserve clarity, respect, and a meaningful say in your care.

No Shame Recovery Counseling provides individual telehealth counseling for adults ages 18 and older physically located in New Hampshire.
